NEW YORK, NY – Singer/songwriter Glenna Bell, whose new CD, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder, was released late last year to much critical acclaim, will return to play Googie's Lounge above The Living Room on Thursday, February 10th. Her 9:30PM set will be upstairs in Googie's Lounge, a more intimate room just perfect for Glenna’s music. The Living Room is located at 154 Ludlow Street, New York, NY 10012. For more information on the club visit www.livingroomny.com.
Reviews of Glenna’s new CD have been nothing less than stellar. Noted UK magazine, Maverick, said in its 4 ½ star review of the new CD: “Glenna Bell's acoustic folk-country canon is oddly different, almost addictive.” The Houston Chronicle said of her songs: “Efficiency is the key to Bell’s music, both in her writing and in her vocals. Once you hear just a few of her songs, it’s impossible to shake the feelings they evoke.” In a review of her last Living Room show, The Bluegrass Special stated: “…between-songs patter and her lyrics bespeak a writer’s focus on narrative integrity: all the pieces fit and make sense…Onstage she evinces the charming, unself-conscious seductive quality of a woman whose down-home manner isn’t a pose she’s affected as a show-biz gimmick but rather is simply who she is.” And perhaps Country Music People said it best when it declared, “Anyone who cares about the past and future of country music should buy this incredible disc.”
Accompanying Glenna at The Living Room will be all-star musicians Steve Kirkman, on dobro and slide guitar, along with Jeff Eyrich on upright bass. Kirkman, whose talent is well known in the area, is a member of the Hudson Valley group, Hope Machine, as well as playing with Pete Seeger, Red Molly, Kelly Flint and Anthony DaCosta. His sound recalls guitarists such as Ry Cooder and Marc Ribot. Acclaimed producer/musician Jeff Eyrich has recorded and toured with Tim Buckley, John Cale, Bette Midler, Dave’s True Story, and currently with Lipbone Redding. His production credits include work with T Bone Burnett, The Blasters and The Plimsouls.
It will be a pleasure to perform for a studio audience at WXLV Radio Studios during the live broadcast of Big Kev Ploghoft's popular radio show, The Big Country Revue. Tickets are available through the station, and everybody can tune in online at the XLV Web site. Let the good times roll on . . . Y'all come!
I'm looking forward to joining Big Kev Ploghoft as the first musical guest on his brand new radio program, Roots, Rock and Rebellion, on WLVR 91.3 FM in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, one of the most scenic locations in America on the quaint Lehigh Valley college campus--picture scenes from The Dead Poet's Society or perhaps a Norman Rockwell Christmas card . . . I'll regale you with a few songs from my new album, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder, maybe even do a cover or two, we'll talk about music, art, life (and sports!), and we'll give away some signed copies of my new music. Y'all come!
I just got word that I'll be a guest on Jerry Treacy's great Americana radio show, Crash on the Levee, broadcasting live from the edge of NYC! This is something I've wanted to do for a long time--I'm really looking forward to it, and I hope that you'll tune in online or on the dial at FM 89.1 if you're in the New Jersey/NYC area. Y'all come!
Pizzitola's Bar-B-Cue joint over on Shepherd near I-10 is the kind of place that goes way back in Houston, just like the family who owns it. The neighborhood's certainly changed in the many decades since Pizzitola's opened, but its 70 year old smoker is still spreading the attractive smells of meats cooked over East Texas hickory. With the rampage take over of townhome complexes, chain restaurants and bars on the "new" Washington strip nearby, Pizzitola's is a welcomed reminder of "THE REAL HOUSTON"--the kind of spot to take folks from out of town, one of the last places in Houston that actually feels like Texas. I find myself making my way to Pizzitola's just about every week when I'm in town to sit in with my friend and fellow songwriter, Jimmy Pizzitola. In fact, a variety of good players from the Houston music scene often show up and accompany Jimmy, and local songwriters like Matt Harlan who was recently on the Billboard chart also perform when they're not on the road. I'm really enjoying doing these family shows, and I hope that you will join us for lunch on a Saturday. There is plenty of parking, and the bar-b-cue is THE BEST. In May 2010, the New York Times said that Pizzitola's is THE place to go for the real deal in Houston. See for yourself at http://travel.nytimes.com/2010/05/09/travel/09hours.html?hpw

I'll be doing a song swap from 8-11 p.m. with two friends who go way back, Bob King and Gene Williams. Bob is an innovative musician and singer-songwriter, a committed artist who has carved out a place for himself on the river of this musical Texas hill country town, not far from Austin. I first knew Bob as a talented young composer and pianist and have enjoyed seeing him evolve through the years of playing bass in a punk band that featured Scott H. Biram as teenage front man and writing a body of songs on the guitar that have always kept me wondering what next? Gene Williams is an accomplished singer-songwriter I met years ago at SXSW when he was accompanying Jimmy Lafave on guitar. Gene lives in Oklahoma now, and is an active part of the music scene in the Tulsa area. He tours often in Europe and the U.S. with the Watchman and others. And Wake the Dead Coffee House in San Marcos is an intimate space with a lively Saturday night crowd of regulars and some room for more. All of the details are on the calendar page at www.glennabell.com AND I’ve posted a new picture of me singing and playing at the Living Room in NYC on the home page, as well as more performance pic’s on the photos page.
Y'all come!
When I get back to Houston, I'm looking forward to making a special appearance at one of my favorite neighborhood venues, Bohemeos, to commemorate the opening reception of friend and colleague, the artist, Rudy Villarreal. The art opening is from 7-11 p.m., and I'll perform a few songs between 8-8:45. It will be a good seasonal event with a family friendly feel. A highly recommended cultural evening. Y'all come!

It will be a long-awaited treat to hang out with Roark on his popular Wide Open Spaces morning show here in Houston. We'll be talking about the new album and the HCC event where I'll be appearing that evening. You can tune in online at www.kpft.org or listen the old-fashioned way at 90.1 FM on your dial if you're in the Houston Metropolitan area. Y'all come!
I'm looking forward to the the annual CAFE evening at Houston Community College. There will be several short plays, beginning at 6, followed by a catered reception where I'll be entertaining in a casual atmosphere. The event is open to the public. Y'all come!

Spare Change is a music program that uses artists that are seldom heard together. There is no format to speak of, but the focus of the production is to allow the listener to participate in a form of "free association." Tune in anytime during the show and allow your senses to be treated to a variety of sounds and rhythms that make your world a more interesting place to be. And tune in at 1 pm CST on Saturday to get a preview of the CD release performance that is scheduled for the same evening at the Heights Presbyterian Church listening room. Y'all come!
I'm playing a great new listening room series called Heights Live! in the historic Houston Heights. It will be a song swap with Craig Kinsey of Houston's popular band, The Sideshow Tramps, and Freddie Krc, who is a member of the Texas Music Hall of Fame, founder of the Explosives, and a long-time drummer with Jerry Jeff Walker's band. He has appeared on over a hundred albums with such diverse artists as Carole King, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, and Roky Erickson, and he played drums with Doug Sahm and B.W. Stevenson, amongst many others. Since 1998, Freddie Steady has been the only Texas songwriter signed to a publshing deal with the legendary team of Leiber & Stoller. Read more about his fascinating life and check out music at the Fat Pete record label Web site: http://www.fatpete.com/artists/freddie_steady_krc.php
Some recent Heights Live! performances include Austin-based Americana touring acts, Rosie Flores, Adam Carroll, Walt Wilkins, Andrew Hardin, Graham Wilkinson, Jason Eady, and more.
Here's a little write up about the three impressive women behind the scenes:
"Three ladies who love live music wanted to promote the music scene in Houston. We started a non-profit (Greater Houston Music Alliance) to raise awareness of the scene to benefit local musicians, but also to attract touring artists to schedule shows here. We were contacted by the minister of Heights Presbyterian Church, Mark Downs, to start a music series. Mark used to play with the Indigo Girls, and he personally built the listening room / music hall. Through this series, artists have approached us to book shows - hence our agency "Now Hear This!" We are building great relationships that we wouldn't have had otherwise, and that will help with our vision. And,we're having fun."
And that's what it's all about. I guarantee that you'll have some fun, too, if you join Freddie Krc and me on October 2 for a family friendly show in a warmly intimate, acoustically balanced atmosphere. All performances are BYOB, and snacks and set-ups are available for purchase.
The last time that I played Wrecks Bell's legendary folk venue in the breezy, coastal town of Galveston, Texas was about five years ago when I was just getting started. I was thrilled to open for Hayes Carll and then to be part of the annual Townes Van Zandt tribute on New Year's Day, when singer songwriters from far and wide show up to pay respects and play a favorite Townes tune or two. Wrecks and Townes were good friends and musical collaborators. Wrecks liked my performance--he gave me a t-shirt and a compliment. That meant a lot, coming from someone with his musical background, for he's seen a great deal of talent come through the Old Quarter through the years. I'll be sharing the evening with someone yet to be booked. I will post more details as soon as I hear. I highly recommend this show. Everybody should go the Old Quarter at least once in a lifetime. Sadly, these kind of old-school listening rooms are a dying breed. Y'all come!
Come join me Wednesday evenings with Jimmy Pizzitola at the popular night spot, Avant Garden on the Westheimer curve in Houston's Montrose arts district. We kicked it off there in May, and it really is turning out to be a lot of fun with a strong audience of people who are into songs. While I've been away, Jimmy's been performing with a talented cello player and a violinist, and I'm really looking forward to hearing them together for the first time. Jimmy's repertoire includes some of my favorites by Sam Baker, Del Reeves, and Blaze Foley, as well as the GREAT originals from his new album, Poet on the Run. The famous music critic, Joe Nick Patoski recently wrote, "I'm digging the Jimmy P... he covers Blaze great, but it's his songs that close the deal for me. Between the sentimental romance and the vivid imagery in Poet On The Run, Jimmy P.'s got it going on" (March 5, 2010). I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, Poet on the Run is on my list of "top albums ever recorded." No kidding. It's really THAT GOOD. Check out Jimmy's site and listen to some tracks at http://www.poetontherun.net . . .
At the Avant Garden shows, I'll be doing songs from my forthcoming release, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder, as well as some Johnny Cash covers like Get Rhythm and Sunday Morning Coming Down, plus a few by Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams, Sr. and whoever else I might decide to throw into the mix. This will be a GUARANTEED GOOD TIME, but it is a good idea to call ahead just to make sure that we'll be there because every now and then they book private parties on Wednesday evenings. Y'all come!
ABOUT AVANTE GARDEN: Avant Garden has been a mainstay of the Houston arts scene for years, and the New York Times named it one of the top "must visit" venues in Houston.
I'm going to be on one of my favorite radio programs anywhere on the globe – the Blues on the Move show here in Houston with Mr. and Mrs. V and their sidekick, Nanc. We’ll be spinning some songs from Perfectly Legal and talking about the Houston CD release, which is coming up next Saturday evening at the Heights Presbyterian Church listening room, as part of the new Heights Live songwriter series.
If you're not in the Houston area, you can tune in online tomorrow morning at kpft.org. If you are in Houston, just set your dial to 90.1 FM. And I will hope to see you in the Heights on Saturday. I'll be joining Theo Anderson on his Wild Blue Yonder show via telephone on September 24, when we'll be talking all about the making of Perfectly Legal and playing some songs, too. Theo is quite the Renaissance man, both a radio host and a critically-acclaimed photographer, who did me the honor of spending a day in the Pennsylvania wilds, taking the gorgeous pictures that you see on my new album cover! Check out more of Theo's work at www.theoanderson.com and y'all come!

It will be good to get back to Bohemeos, my neighborhood music venue over in the ol' Segundo Barrio of Houston's east side. I was invited to share the evening by the folk rock, minimalist, indie act, Steve and Mel, and I'm sure it will be a "bohemian" time for all. A nice transition back to Houston from my recent excursion in Greenwich Village. Y'all come!

My song, "La Casa Que Yo Amo" (The Road Less Traveled, 2008), is featured in the independent film, Playing House, a UV Lite Production shot in Los Angeles. The movie is a thriller, directed and co-written by Tom Vaughan.
Here's the synopsis: In order to afford their dream house, two newlyweds ask their best friend to move in with them. It proves a dangerous decision when their friend brings home a stunning temptress who will do anything to achieve her own dark idea of the American dream.
It's going to be a lot of fun to "go Hollywood" for a night at the Houston premier! I'm really looking forward to hearing myself on the big screen!! Hah!
With the rampage take over of townhome complexes, chain restaurants and bars on the "new" Washington strip nearby, Pizzitola's is a welcomed reminder of "THE REAL HOUSTON"--the kind of spot to take folks from out of town, one of the last places in Houston that actually feels like Houston. I find myself making my way to Pizzitola's just about every week when I'm in town, so Jimmy and I decided to make it official, and I'll be sitting in regularly this summer. A variety of good players from bands around town often show up and accompany Jimmy, and local songwriters like Matt Harlan who was recently on the Billboard chart also perform when they're not on the road. I'm really enjoying doing these family shows, and I hope that you will join us for lunch on a Saturday. There is plenty of parking, and the bar-b-cue is THE BEST. In May 2010, the New York Times said that Pizzitola's is THE place to go for the real deal in Houston. See for yourself athttp://travel.nytimes.com/2010/05/09/travel/09hours.html?hpw

There's no place like home -- I'm anxious to get back to Houston from NYC to resume Wednesday evenings with Jimmy Pizzitola at the popular night spot, Avant Garden on the Westheimer curve in Houston's Montrose arts district. Check out Jimmy's site and listen to some tracks at http://www.poetontherun.net . . .

I'll be in New York City through mid August, finalizing the new album for your listening pleasure. Stay tuned . . .
The pre-release party with Big Kev will spill over into the Free Form show with Ralph Drake. Both of these radio hosts have been so supportive of my music. It will be a pleasure to join them on their shows. We will be spinning tracks from Perfectly Legal, talking about the making of the album, and I'll play a song or two live on the air. Y'all come!
It will be so much fun to join Big Kev in the studio where we'll be throwing a pre-release party for my new album, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love and Murder. Big Kev is the Music Director at this college radio station in Pennsylvania about an hour and a half from New York City, and his popular show, The Big Country Revue, features a variety of Americana artists every week, plus touring acts such as Paul Thorn, Hayes Carll, Chuck Meade of BR549 fame, Raul Malo of the Mavericks, and so many more. This week it will be the inimitable Glenna Bell, live and wired. Big Kev is a bigger than life character I met in Nashvile a couple of years ago. Some would even call him a giant among men--he stands a full six feet nine inches tall and sports a thick Bronx accent! And there is never a dull moment with Big Kev. He even inspired me to write a tribute song to immortalize him in verse: A little Big Kev just ain't enough . . . goes the refrain, which has become the theme song for The Big Country Revue! Don't miss this one--tune in online or on the dial if you're in the Lehigh Valley area. And give us a call at the studio line: 610-799-4141 wherever you may be. What's a party without YOU, my dear friend. Don't be a stranger, now. Y'all come!
I am really looking forward to appearing on Thom Wodock's alt country show, Common Thread! Thom plays a selection of bands and performers like The Mekons, X, Alejandro Escovedo, The Waco Brothers, Kelly Hogan, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Earle, Chris Mills, Emmylou Harris, Drive By Truckers, Neko Case and on and on, and WDVR is the home of the Heartlands Hayride, which is the only regularly scheduled Country Music Show performed before a live audience in the Northeast every Saturday night from 6 to 8 pm. Heartlands Hayride was created to foster, encourage, and actively promote the musical arts. I hope that you will tune in online on Monday, August 9, or on the dial if you are in the Delaware/Lehigh Valley of New Jersey/Pennsylvania. And you are invited to call in during the show; in fact, WDVR encourages it: "In the often-voiced, unsolicited opinion of our dedicated listeners, 'WDVR is a rare breath of fresh air in the cookie cutter sameness of today's radio landscape." God bless non-commercial radio! Y'all come!!

I just got a very special invitation from someone whose song writing I have admired since I was a teenager: the legendary Shake Russell! It will be a song swap at the Mucky Duck, the first in a series that Shake will be hosting at this landmark folk/acoustic venue, and besides Shake and me, there will be Kelly McGuire, "an award-winning Texas singer songwriter." Put this one on your calendar of not-to-be-missed shows in Houston. In case you didn't know, Shake wrote "Deep in the West," which was recorded by Waylon Jennings and his wife, Jessi Colter. He also wrote another one of my favorites, "You've Got a Lover," which Ricky Skaggs took to the top of the Country Music Chart in the 1980s. And he has written A LOT more great songs. A genuine troubadour. I am honored, and I hope that you will be there if you can. Y'all come!

ABOUT AVANTE GARDEN: Avant Garden has a relaxed atmosphere, and the summer months are really pleasant in the evenings out on the patio in the breeze under the old shade trees, where you can hear us playing and singing in the adjacent downstairs room. It has been a mainstay of the Houston arts scene for years, and the New York Times named it one of the top "must visit" venues in Houston.

My friend and fellow songwriter, Matt McDonald, invited me to join him again at one of Houston's newer venues, The Broken Spoke over on the recently revamped Washington Avenue strip. Don't let the name confuse you. When I first heard of the place, I thought it would be what one would naturally imagine in Texas -- the old wagon wheel sign out front with the "broken spoke." But, in fact, this is a Belgian cafe with good food (including fresh clams!) and a romantic ambience that is comfortable and yet not stuffy or high brow. Check out the moderately-priced menu on their Web site. And check out Matt, too. His music mesmerized me the last time I heard him! Here's a link to his site: http://www.myspace.com/mattmcdonaldsmusic

But, in fact, this is a Belgian cafe with very good food and atmosphere. I think the idea of the broken spoke relates more to cycling, which is the direction the new Heights seems to be heading--condo's, SUV's, and a bunch of health conscious folks who are on that "upwardly mobile" track. Check out the reasonably-priced menu on their Web site, and stop by Tuesday evening if you're in the area. Matt and I will be playing and singing up a storm, and it should be a really good time for all. Y'all come!
It's time again for one of my favorite events -- the annual puppet show by the AMAZING Natali Leduc -- on the East Side. Here's a copy of the invitation . . . Y'all come!
"Please join us for an evening of compelling puppets, meaningful music, and food (hopefully flavorsome food) on Saturday April 3rd, starting at 6:30pm. Another wonderful free event at the American Consumer Consortium Headquarters.
Florville and Courval
This PUPPET show is based on the Marquis de Sade’s short story “Florville and Courval,” written around 1778 while the Marquis was imprisoned in the Bastille. Do not expect obscenity… Rather: beautiful psychological disturbance.
Music by GLENNA BELL and JIMMY PIZZITOLA - and maybe by Iron Maiden (they have not confirmed yet)
We are honored that Glenna accepted to sing at our headquarters once again. Her songs “speak” Texan better than a longhorn and the lone star put together, yet they also have a universal appeal (you can have a glimpse at her wondrous voice on her website: www.glennabell.com)
Jimmy is also returning to the American Consumer Consortium headquarters, now with a freshly pressed CD under the 6 strings: “Poet on the run” (soon on 8-tracks)… follow his itinerary (and look at Glenna’s dog) on: www.poetontherun.net
It’s a BYOC event (BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR), you might also consider bringing your own beverage and your own ideas– if you stick long enough, you might get some free food!
It will be an outdoor event if the weather is nice, if it’s not, we’ll bring it indoors.
Oh! I want to go but how do I get there? Be it by bicycle, car, foot, truck, airplane, elephant ride, magic carpet, etc. you can access the American Consumer Consortium Headquarters:
341 N. Hutcheson (Houston, TX 77003) (You can send us letters now!)
Corner of York and Navigation, entrance on North Hutcheson (side street)
From I-10: exit Waco. Go South on Waco, it will turn into Hirsch, then into York. Take a left on Navigation, then take a right on the very first street: North Hutcheson. Fence, gate, red mailbox, weird bicycle contraption falling apart on your right hand side: you are there!
From I-45 (South or North): exit Scott. Turn left on Scott (you will be going North). Scott will turn into York. Turn right on Navigation and right again on the very first street: North Hutcheson. Fence, gate, red mailbox, weird bicycle contraption falling apart on your right hand side: you are there!
For more information, do not hesitate to call: 713-227-7031."
During SXSW in Austin, I'll be doing a live radio broadcast hosted by Big Kev Ploghoft of WXLV radio in Pennsylvania in a line-up of Texas and Americana acts, including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Tommy Shannon who played with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Elizabeth Cook, Roky Erickson of the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Jimmy Pizzitola and more. The recordings will also be archived at Texas Tech, and there are various other sponsors involved. This event will be open to the public. Check out the Opah! Web site and the Austin Chronicle for other artists and time slots. Y'all come!
I'll be playing the first annual Cash Bash at the Continental Club here in Houston this year after playing the one at the Continental Club in Austin for the last two years in a row. There'll be a line-up of GREAT Texas acts. A guaranteed good time . . . Check out the Web site at www.johnnycashbash.com
Y'all come!
Producer Big Kev Ploghoft and I will be wrapping up my new release, Perfectly Legal: Songs of Sex, Love, and Death, at Backstage Recording Studio in New Jersey, about thirty minutes from Manhattan. The EP will feature seven songs, four originals and three covers, and they're sounding GREAT. Stay tuned for release dates and previews to be posted here on the official Glenna Bell web site in 2010!
I want to encourage you to tune in to one of my favorite radio shows that I try not to miss on Saturday afternoons, Rough Draft--Freeform Radio with host, Ralph Drake, whose taste in music I have come to admire through his showcasing of some of the most talented acts I've ever heard. I've loved some of them for years, such as Johnny Cash who was also a personal friend of Ralph's, and others are acts such as Wheezer, whom I've recently discovered through Ralph's show. I must say that I am honored to be a guest on Rough Draft, and I certainly hope that you will tune in on Saturday, January 9, just after my appearance on Big Kev's Big Country Review--up high in the beautiful state of snowy Pennsylvania. Listen online if you're not in PA, and y'all come!
I'm looking forward to being Big Kev's guest on his popular Americana radio show, The Big Country Revue. I'll be on and off the air between noon and three o'clock Saturday afternoon, so plan to tune in online if you're not in the Allentown, PA area. And by all means, call in to say hello or request a song. The more the merrier, as the saying goes. Y'all come!
During November and December, I'll be wrapping up the new release that I've been recording all year with Big Kev Ploghoft up on the East Coast. The songs are really sounding good, and the scheduled release date is Spring 2010. I will keep you posted. Y'all come!
I’ve been invited to play a show with Texas Troubador Jimmy Pizzitola from Houston, and "indie/americana/alternative" artist, Rebecca Pronsky from Brooklyn, NYC. Check out their music at www.myspace.com/jimmypizzitola and at www.myspace.com/rebeccapronsky. I’ll kick off the evening at about 10 o’clock and will play ’til about 11; then I’ll be hanging around Rudz just enjoying the music, food, and festive atmosphere as we all prepare to ring in another new year. I’d love to see you, fellow Houstonians, so y’all come!
I LOVE Christmas, and it's time to pull out the ol' mistletoe and Christmas songs for this really GREAT holiday event, hosted by radio personality, Zoolander, from one of Houston's biggest commercial stations, 104 KRBE, at one of Houston's hottest new venues, Boheme. It's an intimate space with a chic vibe, plus wine, beer and cool drinks. (They had a Michael Jackson tribute event there earlier this year that was PACKED.)
Each performer for this event is doing a few Christmas or holiday-ish songs. Kady Malloy, who was a semifinalist on American Idol, is performing. They also have Low Man’s Joe and Versecity, popular local bands, and a dance trio. All the performers are donating their time to benefit the Osito Foundation, which gives teddy bears to kids with HIV/AIDS. They will be there taking donations, etc. Having KRBE participate will give it tons of visibility. And the Houston Chronicle music editor, Joey Guerra, who named The Road Less Traveled album of the year for 2008 will also plugging it via the Chronicle.
This will be a lot of fun for a very good cause. Y'all come!
I'll be performing several songs from my new release, scheduled for January 2010, at this big event that will showcase the award-winning essays by students of the Northeast College. The evening is funded by an endowment for the arts -- CAFE, Cultural Arts for Everyone -- and is open to the public. Y'all come!
This fall, I'll be in the studio, recording the last tracks for my new release, scheduled for January of 2010; then, the rest of the autumn months will be devoted to mixing, mastering, and manufacturing. I'll keep you posted on shows that might come up along the way, but the rest of the year will focus on the new album, produced by Americana Radio Personality, Big Kev Ploghoft, and recorded at WXLV radio studios in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania. In mid-September, Theo Anderson at http://www.theoanderson.com took my pictures for the cover in the wilds of PA, and they look amazing. The songs are sounding GREAT, too, so get ready . . . Y'all come!
I'm looking forward to a good show with my friend and fellow Houstonian, Matt McDonald, at one of Houston's landmark venues, Avant Garden (formerly Helios) on the Westheimer curve in Houston's hip Montrose arts district. Avant Garden is an intimate, low-key coffee house/bar where many of Houston's finest acts have played through the years. It will be good to be back, and I hope you will join us. Check out Matt's music at http://www.myspace.com/macsonix

I'm looking forward to a big week in Nashville during the Americana Music Association's annual conference. I'll be posting more on this in the near future. Y'all come!
I am excited about the the upcoming photo shoot for my new album with acclaimed photographer, Theo Anderson, at the historic jail in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. Nearly ten years ago, I read a ghost story about the place, best known for its gallows where seven of the Molly Maguires miners were executed, and I never dreamed that I would be photographed in this mysterious and breathtaking location. Jim Thorpe is a gorgeous town, nestled amidst the Appalachian mountains of Pennsylvania, and will be the perfect setting for the shoot. And Mr. Anderson's contribution will certainly be an honor. Tune in for the Houston Press Music Awards one-hour documentary on Channel 39 in Houston and surrounding areas. It will air Sunday, September 6 from 2-3 p.m. with limited commercial interruption. There will only be three 2 minute commercial breaks in the entire show. Channel 39 filmed my performance and an interview at the Houston Press Music Awards Showcase at Dean's Credit Clothing in Downtown Houston back in July. It was a big day in cow town with all of Houston's finest acts showcasing their talent--everyone from Scarface to Glenna Bell. Y'all come!
I'll be continuing my recording project with producer, Big Kev, and the Gin Mill Kings . . . The album is due out in January of 2010. It's going to be a good one, another concept album with everything from a Sam Cooke song sung a capella to a full-blown, live version of my "Cougar Anthem" with the Gin Mills Kings backing me up . . . One track from the release will debut at the Americana Music Conference in Nashville in September. Y'all come!
I'll be on the air bright and early with Americana Radio Personality, Chance Austin for the XLV drive-time morning show. This will be a special guest appearance, as Chance continues his search for a co-host to fill the shoes of Dawn Warner, who is now at a brand new AM station in State College, PA, home of Penn Sate U. I'm really looking forward to cutting up with Chance for a couple of hours, and I'll get to read the weather and news, too. Unfortunately, I won't be the permanent co-host for the show since I'm based in Houston, but it's going to be a fun day in PA. Y'all come!

Penn State here I come! Bringing a whole lotta Texas your way . . .
The Gin Mill Kings will be backing me on my new EP. Let the recording continue . . . Soon, you'll be hearing a collection of new songs from Texas, recorded live on the East Coast. These Jersey Boys really rock!
I'll be sharing an evening of songs with Austin-based singer-songwriter, Brennen Leigh at Godfrey Daniels theater in Pennsylvania, and a lot more while I'm up East . . . Let the adventure unfold . . . Y'all come!
Here's a bit about Brennen Leigh, copied from her MySpace page:
"In just a few years, Leigh—alongside brother Seth Hulbert—has firmly established herself as one of the Lone Star State's premiere singers and songwriters. With her third full-length effort, Devil's on My Trail, Leigh is poised to take her time-honored, country-tinged sound to a whole new level. Leigh's approach is both astoundingly simple and wonderfully complex. Her sound is an intoxicating blend of raw talent, wily wit and bittersweet heartbreak—all touched by an affecting, uncommon grace. Indeed, Devil‚s on My Trail is steeped in the teary-eyed sound of '60s and 70's country music, buoyed by Leigh's affinity for early Dolly Parton, Gram Parsons and Roy Acuff recordings. Leigh's and Hulbert's love for music began at an early age via their father's record collection, which included everything from Asleep at the Wheel to Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Dad also sang and played guitar. Effortless harmonies with brother Seth frame Leigh's high, lonesome vocal style, which recalls the best elements of Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Tanya Tucker and Hank Williams, among others. One listen to Devil's on My Trail should hook fans of any age — instantly. Best to try it on live, in our intimate listening room."
I'll be rehearsing with the Gin Mill Kings in the little studio at the edge of the Big Apple! Getting ready to continue recording the new EP in PA . . .
I had surgery on April 20, so the shows will be on hold for a little while as I recuperate. Nothing life-threatening, though--I will be back at it SOON, and I’ll keep you posted, as always. I should be playing in Pennsylvania/East Coast by the end of May . . .

I'm really looking forward to playing South By Due East, Houston's alternative to Austin's South By Southwest, when I head home from Austin on the last day of SXSW. (Houston is "due east" of Austin on Interstate 10, thus the name of the festival.) I've heard really good things about this well-established and well-organized event, spearheaded by Guy Schwartz of The New Jack Hippies fame. Last year, Billy Block came in from Nashville and played drums with some of the bands. What a treat! No doubt, there will be great music and a GREAT time to be had by all at one of Houston's landmark music venues, Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, where Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) has been known to show up and jam, along with a few other "big names" through the years, including Kevin Costner, believe it or not! They'll also be filming this performance, and so I hope to see you in the audience on March 22. Y'all come!
During South by Southwest, I'll be playing an acoustic set at Threadgill's in a line-up of acts sponsored by my distributor, Burnside Distribution Corporation, in Portland, Oregon. This will be an all-day event, and a real hoot, no doubt, at Threadgill's right in the middle of all the SXSW mayhem! Y'all come.
During South By Southwest, I'll be in a recording session in Austin with WXLV Americana radio personality, Big Kev, and Americana Music Association Board Member, Fred Boenig. The line-up of acts to be recorded includes Audrey Auld, Gurf Morlix, Ray Wylie Hubbard, The Tejas Brothers, Glenna Bell, Dale Watson, Jesse Dayton, Rosie Flores, Chuck Mead, Raul Malo, Stone Canyon Boys, Al Moss, Sunny Sweeney, and Scott Miller.
I'm finishing my EP at the
I'll be playing the BIG Johnny Cash Bash at the first annual Cash Bash at the Continental Club here in Houston this year after playing it the last two years at the Continental Club in Austin. There'll be a whole line up of great acts doing Johnny Cash covers, as well as some original material, too. A guaranteed GOOD time. Y'all come!
I'll be one of the acts in this tribute to Johnny Cash, the third annual "Cash Bash" in Austin! Last year, I played this event to a sold out, standing room only crowd wearing black. Earl Poole Ball (Johnny Cash's piano player for two decades) joined me on stage, and it was quite a show. This year, I'll be up there with someone dear to me, Bob King of San Marcos, Texas. Rowdy Tijmes of Austin's KOOP radio is behind this event, which just gets bigger and better every year. Get tickets early 'cause this one has sold out for the last two years in a row. Johnny Cash, Austin, the Continental Club . . . a GUARANTEED good time! Y'all come!
Through January, I'm spending time on the East Coast, rehearsing and recording some new songs with the charming little Gin Mill Kingz band, based in NJ at the edge of NYC. I'll post some of the recordings this Spring . . .
I'll be spending some time rehearsing with the CHARMING NJ/NYC band, The Gin Mill Kingz, and recording with them up East at the WXLV studios in Pennsylvania. Please check back for song postings after the New Year!

I'll enjoy this Friday afternoon with His Royal Bigness, radio personality Big Kev, at WXLV! It's going to be a BIG weekend in Pennsylvania, so tune in online and join us for a good old-fashioned afternoon on the radio. Y'all come!
I'll be making a special appearance at this fine arts event sponsored by the Northeast College CAFE Project.
acoustic showcase at this BIG roots music event:
"The World United Music Festival, presented by the United States Entertainment Force (U.S.E.F.), in conjunction with the Roots Music Association, finds it’s home in beautiful San Marcos, Texas. Located between Austin and San Antonio, San Marcos is an ideal place for a festival of this size and magnitude with over hundreds of bands being connected to over 300 radio stations and industry labels. Not to mention major headliners to end each night with a bang. This seven stage, three-day event promises to be an historical event for musicians, industry heads, and the 100,000 festival attendees projected to attend. The Roots Music Association (RMA) researched and has chosen the top 200 independent music acts of hundreds of entries from around the world to showcase their talent.
The RMA Radio and Music Industry Convention will be held in the brand new convention center being built just minutes away from the festival. Seminars will be held Friday and Saturday with speakers addressing the ever-changing industry of radio and music production and it’s relationship with labels and the future of the music industry.
The Mayor and the city of San Marcos of gone to great lengths to accommodate this festival and convention. Also the governor has given his blessing and welcomes the U.S.E.F. to Texas. U.S.E.F. is a non-profit organization that helps the families of troops that are deployed over seas."
